The first crucial step is to identify whether you fall under any of the circumstances that would allow you to obtain Portuguese nationality. There are different pathways to acquire nationality, so it’s essential to check which criteria apply to your case and what documents are required for your specific type of application.

If there are any doubts about eligibility or the procedure, considering the hiring of a specialized professional might be a good option.

The second step is to gather all the required documentation. Depending on the basis of your nationality application, this stage may involve searching for older documents, especially in cases where the application is based on Portuguese descent. Birth certificates, baptism records, marriage certificates, and documents proving a connection to Portugal are often necessary.

Once all the documents have been collected, it is essential to carefully confirm that the documentation is complete. Additionally, it’s important to check if all documents are within their validity periods and, if issued abroad, whether they have been apostilled or legalized. Expired or incomplete documents can delay or even invalidate the process. A detailed review at this stage can prevent future problems and ensure that your application is processed as quickly and efficiently as possible.

With all the documents gathered and reviewed, it’s time to submit the application. This can be done in two ways: online, through a lawyer or solicitor representing the applicant, or, if you choose not to hire a lawyer, the application can be made in person at a Nationality Service Desk. Regardless of the choice, you will need to complete the specific form and pay the fee corresponding to the type of nationality application.

After submission, the process will follow the legal procedures established for such cases by the relevant authorities. In some instances, at a later stage (usually in phase 4), additional documentation may be required if requested by the responsible entity.

Processing times can vary. It is important to monitor the progress of the application and be prepared for any additional requests.
