30/11/2023
As of 1st January 2024, Decree-Law no. 109/2023, of 24 November, will come into force, implementing the forty-fifth amendment to Decree-Law no. 10-A/2020, of 13 March, which established the exceptional and temporary measures related to the epidemiological situation of COVID-19.
Following the transfer of administrative powers as part of the restructuring of the Portuguese border control system, namely the transfer of powers from the Foreigners and Borders Service (SEF) to seven bodies, the new Decree-Law stipulates that documents and visas for stay in the national territory which expire on 25th November or in the 15 days prior, will be accepted until 30th June 2024.
After that date, documents and visas for staying in the country will only be accepted if the holder can prove that they have scheduled their renewal.
It should be noted that this regime does not apply to documents issued under Council of Ministers Resolution 29-A/2022, of 1 March, which establishes specific criteria for granting temporary protection to displaced persons from Ukraine.
