In Portugal, it is possible to lose one’s nationality upon the request of the person involved when marrying a foreigner or voluntarily acquiring another nationality.
However, Portuguese legislation allows those who have lost their nationality to apply for it again.
According to articles 30 and 31 of the Nationality Law (No. 37/81, dated October 3rd), respectively, a Portuguese woman who has acquired another nationality through marriage to a foreign citizen or a person who has voluntarily acquired another nationality can regain Portuguese nationality.
This possibility, however, is only applicable to those who lost Portuguese nationality before October 3rd, 1981.
