At the beginning of October, a new nationality platform began operating at the Central Registry Office in Lisbon and at the Central Archive in Porto.
This initiative represents an important step in modernizing nationality services, promising to simplify and expedite the processing of applications. The new platform will be extended to the remaining nationality counters starting in November.
Among the various features that have been implemented, one of the most notable changes is the simplification of the number of stages that a nationality application must go through. Previously, applicants faced a journey of 7 stages; now, with the new platform, this number has been reduced to just 4 stages.
Additionally, in the previous platform, one of the main difficulties was the time taken to obtain the registration as a Portuguese citizen and the respective birth certificate after the nationality grant dispatch. Even with a favourable dispatch, the process often remained stalled at this stage. Now, with the new platform, which is integrated with the civil registry system, the birth registration is automatically recorded as soon as the nationality grant dispatch is issued, significantly speeding up this phase of the process.
The implementation of this new platform represents a significant advancement in modernizing nationality services in Portugal. With the promise of greater efficiency, transparency, and reduced bureaucracy, the Government is committed to providing a more agile service to citizens.
